원어민 영어교사한테 Reach/Direct/Continue 물어봄. 답변 꽤 설득력 있음

Hey, I have a question regarding the TOEIC test I took yesterday.

<본인이 원어민에게 한 질문>

(문제가 정확히 기억나진 않지만 대충 저런 뉘앙스였고 빈칸 앞에 before 와 to 는 확실히 있었으니 참작해주삼)

One of the questions in the R/C part had a fill in the blank type question.

I can't remember the exact wording but it was something like this.

Q. Employees need(have) to show their ID(pass) at the security before ________ to their working department.

(This is the closest I can remeber but I'm 100% sure of the 'before' and 'to' near the blank)

A) reaching

B) directing

C) continuing

I chose 'continuing' cause it just sounded more natural to me and also it kind of suggests a sequential action to do something before going to their workstations.

but some(Korean online TOEIC teachers and people online)say 'reaching' and' directing' could also work.

Any opinions?? I'm totally fine if I get that one wrong. Just curious. lol

No, I think you are right. Having "before" and "to" means that continuing is really the only one that fits.

"Reaching their working department" is okay, but "reaching to their working department" doesn't mean the same thing and I can't think of an instance where I would use it.

And "directing to their working department" is grammatically fine, but that changes the meaning of the sentence or would require a different subject. (With before and to, it would more likely be "before being directed to their working department").

Pretty sure you got that point. Hope you get the score you were hoping for!
