The nation`s per capita individual debt hit a new high of nearly 13 million won ($14,000) as of March, as local lenders stepped up corporate lending business in recent months.

The Bank of Korea released its quarterly household budget report yesterday saying that the total private debt amounted to 609.8 trillion won in the first quarter, up 1.3 percent from the end of last year.

The gain mostly came from the fast-growing corporate lending sector in the survey period.

Local firms borrowed more than 36 trillion won in the first three months, nearly double the lending in the last quarter of 2005.

The recent pickup in companies` debt financing activities largely stems from the sluggish demand for household loans.

As regulators and policymakers has gotten tough on mortgage loans for apartment purchases and began to levy heavier tax burdens on home owners, the household lending halved quarter-on-quarter.

Experts expect the downward pace in household lending to accelerate, as banks recently raised interest rates in a response to the call rate hike by the central bank.

Last week, several major lenders such as Kookmin Bank and Woori Bank raised borrowing rates for housing loans after the Financial Supervisory Service hinted at stronger efforts to cool the property market prices.

They nearly shut down the lending business to new mortgage loan seekers upon the government orders to limit the number of mortgages available.

최근 몇 개월간 금융기관이 기업대출을 늘리면서 올해 3월말 현재 1인당 개인빚이 1천300만원에 육박한 것으로 파악되었다.

한국은행이 발표한 2006년 1분기 자금순환동향에 따르면 올해 3월말 현재 개인부채 잔액은 총 609조8천억원으로 지난해 말에 비해 1.3% 증가했다.

이러한 증가는 대부분 조사 기간중 은행들의 기업대출이 급증한데 따른 것으로 나타났다.

1분기 국내 기업들은 36조원 이상을 대출했는데 이는 지난해 동분기에 비해 두배 정도 증가한 액수이다.

최근 기업대출의 급증세는 주로 가계대출 수요의 침체에 기인한 것이다.

규제당국과 정책입안자들이 주택담보대출 조건을 강화하고 부동산 보유자에 대해 세금 부담을 늘릴 계획임에 따라 주택담보대출 액수가 전분기 대비 절반으로 감소했다.

전문가들은 최근 은행들이 한은의 콜금리 인상으로 금리를 올리고 있어 주택담보대출의 하향세가 가속화할 것으로 내다보고 있다.

금융감독원이 부동산 가격 안정을 위한 대책 강화를 시사한 이후 국민은행, 우리은행 등과 같은 주요 시중은행들은 주택담보대출 금리를 인상했다.

정부의 주택담보대출 제한 명령에 따라 시중은행들은 신규 주택담보대출을 거의 중단시켰다.
