Typhoon Ewiniar struck the Korean Peninsula yesterday, leaving at least six people dead or missing in torrential rains, flash floods and mudslides, and causing massive property damage.

According to the nation`s antidisaster authority, the typhoon left four people dead and two missing in the nation`s southeastern region as of yesterday noon. Victims were swept away by rising floods during the constant downpour, the authority said.

The storm also left a Japanese fisherman dead after his boat overturned in high waves. The captain of the small fishing boat was sailing near Sasebo in Nagasaki, south of Japan, according to a local report.

Typhoon Ewiniar, the third storm this year, approached Korea`s southern coast yesterday morning, packing gusts of 20 meters per second and dumping record rainfall.

"The typhoon is moving northward at a speed of 37 kilometer per hour. It will cut through western and central provinces before reaching the East Sea tomorrow morning," said the Korea Meteorological Administration yesterday afternoon. The weather agency said the storm dumped up to 200 millimeters of rain as it passed the Korean peninsula.

Some 235 schools in Jeju, South Gyeongsang and Jeolla Province were closed while damage was reported from flooding and landslides. The government issued a typhoon alert for the southern regions of Korea.

Some 50 people had to be evacuated from their homes after their property was submerged by heavy rainfall. Vast fields of crops were also flooded by the rising waters.

The storm disrupted domestic flights, ferry services and road transport.

Some 108 domestic flights scheduled to leave southeastern regions were cancelled as of yesterday noon, leaving about six thousand people stranded at Jeju Airport alone. Thousands of vessels were shore-bound amid reports of strong waves. All the 47 sea routes between South Jeolla Province and its nearby islands were closed.

More than 2,000 households on Jeju island also experienced electricity outages for an hour as strong winds brought down power lines. A number of houses in South Jeolla region were also left without electricity, officials said.

Ewiniar, which means "Storm God" in the Chuuk language of Micronesia, is the year`s third typhoon. Ewiniar formed in late June in the western Pacific Ocean.

Experts say the strength of Ewiniar is somewhat similar to that of typhoon Rusa, which struck the nation in 2002. Rusa, the strongest typhoon to ever hit Korea, resulted in more than 100 deaths and 5.46 trillion won in damages.

Maemi was the second-most destructive typhoon, which left 10,975 people homeless.

Another typhoon was reportedly heading toward the Korean Peninsula, the KMA said.

The fouth typhoon of the year, Bilis is expected to approach the nation on Tuesday morning.

Formed west of Guam, the typhoon is moving northwest at a speed of 19 kilometers per hour off the Pacific islands.

"But the typhoon won`t be stronger than Ewiniar," said the weather agency.

어제 태풍 에위니아가 한반도를 강타했다. 태풍으로 인한 폭우, 홍수, 산사태 등으로 적어도 6명이 사망했거나 실종되었고 엄청난 재산 피해를 입혔다.

중앙재난안전대책본부에 따르면 어제 정오 현재 태풍 에위니아로 인해 영남지방에서 4명이 사망하고 2명이 실종되었다고 한다. 피해자들은 계속된 집중 호우로 불어난 강물에 휩쓸렸다고 당국은 말했다.

또 거센 파도로 어선이 전복하면서 한 일본인 어부가 사망했다. 국내 언론 보도에 따르면 이 소형 어선 선장은 일본 남부의 나가사키현 사세보시 부근을 항해 중이었다고 한다.

제 3호 태풍 에위니아는 어제 오전 초속 20미터의 강풍과 폭우를 수반한 채 우리나라 남부 해안으로 접근했다.

“태풍 에위니아는 시속 37킬로미터의 속도로 북진하고 있다. 태풍은 서부와 중부 지방을 관통한 뒤 내일 오전 동해로 빠져나갈 것”이라고 기상청은 어제 오후 말했다. 기상청은 태풍이 한반도를 지나면서 최대 200미리미터의 비가 올 거라고 말했다.

홍수와 산사태로 인한 피해가 신고되고 있는 가운데 제주, 경남, 전남, 전북 지역 내 235개 학교가 휴업했다. 정부는 남부 지역에 태풍 경보를 발령했다.

폭우로 가옥이 침수되는 바람에 50여명이 대비해야 했다. 불어난 물로 인해 농경지도 물에 잠겼다.

태풍으로 인해 국내 항공기, 선박, 육상 운송이 모두 차질을 빚었다.

108편의 국내선 항공편이 어제 오후 결항되는 바람에 제주공항에서는 6천여명의 승객들의 발이 묶였다. 강풍 보도에 수천여 척의 선박들이 해변에 정박해 있었다. 전남 지방과 인근 섬을 잇는 47개 해로 모두가 봉쇄되었다.

강풍으로 전력선이 내려앉는 바람에 제주도 내 2천여 세대에 한시간 동안 전기공급이 중단되었다. 전남 지역 내 많은 가구들도 정전 사태를 겪었다고 관계자는 말했다.

미크로네시아 말로 ‘폭풍의 신’이라는 뜻의 에위니아는 올들어 3번째로 발생한 태풍이다. 에위니아는 6월말 서태평양 상에서 발생했다.

전문가들은 에위니아의 규모가 2002년 전국을 강타했던 태풍 루사와 비슷한 수준이라고 말하고 있다. 우리나라를 강타했던 가장 강력한 태풍인 루사로 인해 100명 이상이 사망하고 5조4,600억원의 재산 피해를 입었다.

태풍 매미는 우리나라를 강타한 두번째로 강력한 태풍으로 10,975명의 이재민이 발생했다.

기상청에 따르면 또 다른 태풍이 한반도를 향해 북상 중이라고 한다.

제 4호 태풍인 빌리스는 화요일 오전에 우리나라에 상륙할 것으로 보인다.

괌 서쪽에서 생성된 이 태풍은 태평양 열도를 따라 시속 19킬로미터의 속도로 북서진하고 있다.

“그러나 태풍 빌리스는 에위니아에 비해 규모가 작을 것이다”라고 기상청은 말했다.

남부지방에서 피해가 속출하고 있다니 걱정이네요..
