Fortunately, the scientific investigation of the human–animal bond and its potential for medical and
mental heath interventions has increased in recent decades.
Consistent with the biophilia hypothesis, research suggests that therapies using human–animal interactions may provide a wide range of physiological and psychosocial effects, including lowered blood pressure in patients with hypertension (Schuelke et al., 1991), higher survival rates after discharge from a coronary care unit (Friedmann, Katcher, Lynch, & Thomas, 1980), reductions in anxiety among patients with psychotic and mood disorders (Barker & Dawson, 1998), and increased socialization among elderly residents of care facilities (Fick, 1993).
