Small Talk

1.     When do you think that you’re getting old?

2.     Is there any friend who looks young not only for physical conditions but their mind compared to other friends

3.     What’s their secrets?

Topic1. Ask Yourself.

These are the questions of a different sort - questions about you. They are about your values, your beliefs, and your life; love, money, sex, integrity, generosity, pride, and death are all here.  Here is an enjoyable way to find out more about yourself and others, and to confront ethical dilemmas in a concrete rather than an abstract form.  To respond to these questions, you will need to examine and interpret your past, project yourself into hypothetical situations, face difficult dilemmas, and make painful choices.  These questions can be an avenue individual growth, a tool for deepening relationships, for ships, a quick way to get to know a stranger, or merely a pleasant amusement.

There are no correct or incorrect answers to these questions, only honest or dishonest ones.  Can you know what you would do in a strange hypothetical situation?  Of course you can’t, but why let that inhibit you?  This is a chance to gain insights without actually living through the predicaments described.  Let yourself be swept up in these situations so that you care about the choices you make.  Resist the temptation to escape from a question by denying its reality or by coming up with some complications that obscures the basic issue.  Ignore the paradoxes of time-travel and the impossibility of various magical powers.  Accept that conditions are as described, that odds are accurate, that promises will be fulfilled, and furthermore, that you know this when you are making your decisions.

Don’t simply answer “yes” or “no” to these questions - probe and explain your responses and pursue interesting tangents.  Use the questions as a point of departure and give your imagination full rein as you play with the situations described.

Questions

1.     Imagine, it’s a stormy evening, and now you are driving.  There you see three people waiting for a bus at the bus stop.  One is an old woman who’d be dying soon, another is the very doctor who saved your life once, and the other is your ideal person you can never find again.  But you have to pick only one person. What would you do then?

2.     You are given the power to kill people simply by thinking of their deaths and twice repeating the word “good-bye.”  People would die a natural death and no one would suspect you.  Are there any situations in which you would use this power?

3.     If you could have free, unlimited service for five years from an extremely good cook, chauffeur(기사), housekeeper, masseuse, or personal secretary, which would you choose?

4.     While parking late at night, you slightly scrape the side of a Porsche.  You are certain no one else is aware of what happened.  The damage is minor and would not be covered by insurance.  Would you leave a note?

5.     You and a person you love deeply placed in separate rooms with a button next to each of you.  You know that you will both be killed unless one of you presses your button before 60 minutes pass; furthermore, the first to press the button will save the other person, but will immediately be killed.  What do you think you would do?

6.     You are offered $1,000,000 for the following act: Before you are ten pistols - only one of which is loaded. You must pick up one of the pistols, point it at your forehead, and pull the trigger.  If you can walk away you do so a millionaire.  Would you accept the risk?

Topic2. Extravagant Weddings

South Korea had long been a Confucian society that respected family values. People attached great importance to four major ceremonies ― coming of age, wedding, funeral and ancestral rites(제사). It was common to observe such occasions in a moderate and frugal(검소한) way not only because Koreans were poor but because they opted for a frugal lifestyle.

Now, things have changed, especially with regard to weddings. More and more couples prefer big-budget nuptial ceremonies. Wedding extravagance has become a social malady since the government lifted a decades-old ban on weddings at luxury hotels in 1999. The lifting was inevitable as the authorities could no longer control people’s private lives in a democratic society.

The problem is not the deregulation but people’s way of thinking. Many tend to consider a wedding as a means of showing off their wealth, power and status. Young couples are increasingly forced to accept their parents’ insistence on bigger and costlier formalities.

Unfortunately, this practice denigrates(폄하하다) the true meaning of a wedding. Luxurious ceremonies cannot guarantee conjugal success. Rather, they may help new couples believe that money talks.

Yet, a majority of people are not spendthrifts who can afford luxurious weddings. Some well-to-do businessmen, bureaucrats(관리) and politicians are to blame. They often hold weddings for their sons and daughters at top-notch hotels, spending well over 100 million won ($89,000) in many cases. They don’t even hesitate to pay over 20 million won for a bouquet, not to mention high-price wedding gowns and sumptuous(호화로운) meals.

The authorities need to do more to change people’s thinking and create a new culture for weddings. Around 400,000 couples marry every year with the total weddings bill amounting to 12 trillion won. The average cost for each couple stands at 30 million won. It’s a heavy burden for middle- and low-income families.

Every member of our society should join efforts to prevent extravagance from finding its way into weddings. The rich and powerful must take on the campaign against empty formalities and vanity. It is also required to drastically reduce dowries and phase out the practice of cash donations. Act now before it’s too late as old habits die hard.

Questions

1.     Do you have any plans or thoughts about your wedding ceremony? Do you want to have a luxurious wedding or do you want to make it as simple as possible?

2.     How do you feel when you watch celebrities’ extravagant weddings? Do you envy them or do you think it’s too much?

3.     Do you have any fantasy about wedding ceremony like fancy hotels, designer wedding dresses, diamond rings, bouquets or limousine service?

4.     Is there a specific place you want to go for honeymoon?

5.     Some couples who are planning their wedding ceremony do not exchange wedding presents like hanbok, traditional blankets and the other unnecessary things. Instead, they try to save money for owning a home. What do you think about it?
