During the early years of Japan’s prehistory, the country’s small population survived as hunter-gatherers. When the Yayoi Period started, however, Japan’s population increased by about four million and this rise in population ushered in a new way of living for the people. Practices such as metal casting were introduced to make more durable goods. Seeing the potential for prosperity in selling metal goods, the Yayoi chiefs promoted the making of dotaku, or decorated bells smelted from bronze, signaling the creation of a mining society.
