1)가산 명사는 반드시 앞에 관사가 오거나 복수형으로 쓰인다.

I bought (jacket, a jacket, jackets) with fur trim at the department store.

 

2)불가산 명사는 앞에 부정관사 ‘a/an’이 올 수 없고 복수형으로 쓰일 수도 없다.

I need (a cash, cashes, cash) for my trip.

 

3)의미가 비슷하여 혼동하기 쉬운 가산 명사와 불가산 명사

-복합명사

 

1)복합명사의 형태: ‘명사+명사’

the safety inspection: 안전 검사

Excellent (communicated, communication)skills are required for the position.

 

2)복합명사를 복수형으로 만들 때는 뒤의 명사에 -(e)s를 붙인다.

a research program→ research programs

a job opening→ job openings

 

※ 예외(복합명사인데 앞의 명사에 –s가 붙는 경우): 원래 –s로 끝나는 단어들

sales(판매), customs(세관), savings(저축)

 

-a customs officer: 세관원

-a sales representative: 영업사원

-a savings plan: 저축상품

 

3)[숫자+단위명사+명사]에서 단위명사에는 –s가 붙지 못한다.

six hundreds students(×)→ six hundred students(○)

a four-years-old girl(×)→ a four-year-old girl(○)

 

* 단위명사[s] + of + 복수명사 가능

hundreds/thousands/millions + of + 복수명사

ex)hundreds of the cars: 수백 대의 차들

 

-토익에 잘 나오는 명사: 형태는 비슷하지만 의미가 다른 단어들

 

entry(참여/참가) VS entrance(입구/입장)

 

-the main entrance to the school: 학교 주 출입구

-submit the entry online: 온라인으로 참가 등록을 하다.

1)be comparable to: ~에 필적하다, ~과 비길 만하다

전치사to 다음에 비교하는 대상이 온다.

6)be responsible for: ~에 대해 책임이 있다
