The government yesterday decided to launch an integrated food watchdog this year following a recent outbreak of mass food poisoning at school cafeterias.

The decision came amid mounting calls to streamline food safety and management currently handled by eight government agencies.

Experts said the current system is irresponsible and ineffective, saying it is the main culprit of the incident of mass food poisoning which hit 35 schools and sickened 3,000 students nationwide.

During a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook, Cabinet members agreed to set up the organization, tentatively named `Food Safety Agency,` to manage food safety from production to consumption.

Food safety work is currently carried out by the Korea Food and Drug Administration, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and others.

"We decided to step up the establishment of a food safety agency to prevent such incidents from occurring and to streamline the food safety and management system," Government Information Agency head Kim Chang-ho told a briefing.

Under the plan, the KFDA will be abolished and absorbed into the Ministry of Health and Welfare, among other things.

The government will submit a revision of the law on government organizations in a September parliamentary session with the goal of launching the Food Safety Agency this year.

The prime minister`s office initially outlined the plan in March in the aftermath of the discovery of parasite-infested kimchi and other contaminated food. The government had aimed at beginning the operation of the agency in July, but the plan hit a snag as related government bodies claimed a larger role in the organization.

Meanwhile, the nation`s auditor yesterday began a special probe into school meal services on the request of Prime Minister Han. This is the first time the Board of Audit and Inspection conducted an extensive investigation on school cafeteria services.

The BAI will look into education, food authorities, and local governments as well as food ingredients suppliers such as CJ Food System, Samsung Everland and Dongwon Catering.

The recent infection is widely blamed on contaminated food, most of which was provided by CJ Food System, the No. 1 food supplier and operator of school cafeterias in the nation.

Taking responsibility for the incident, the company decided to shut down its catering business at 93 elementary, middle and high schools and 35 universities around the nation.

Police and health authorities have also looked into the incident, but face difficulties in identifying the cause of the infection.
