The leader of Seoul National University`s student council accepted its decision to impeach him for lying about his background.

"I will comply with the opinion of my colleagues and step down," Hwang Na-yol told reporters after the council members voted for the impeachment motion on Monday night.

It was the first time for a student leader of the top-rated school to be impeached since its establishment 60 years ago.

Some 41 of 81 council members previously introduced the motion against Hwang, saying, "His qualifications as the president of student council are questionable as Hwang wrote a false resume during the election campaign." The 29-year-old religious studies major was elected as the student council president of Seoul National University only last month, drawing media attention for his long list of unusual experiences - a vegetable peddler, underground singer, professional Muay Thai boxer and more.

However, doubts were mounting over his impressive career such as his entry into the medical school of Korea University and experience as a cub reporter of a high-profile monthly magazine.

To clarify the snowballing doubts, the students` association and campus media held a hearing on him, but he failed to give them clear answers, the council members said in the impeachment motion.

서울대 총학생회 회장은 허위경력을 이유로 자신을 탄핵하기로 한 학생회의 결정을 수용했다.

“동료들의 의견에 따라 사퇴하겠다”고 황라열은 월요일 밤 학생회가 탄핵을 가결한 후 기자들에게 말했다.

서울대 총학생회의 회장이 탄핵을 당한 것은 개교 60년 역사상 처음 있는 일이었다.

이에 앞서 학생대표 81명 41명이 “황씨가 선거운동 당시 허위이력을 제출했기 때문에 학생회장으로서의 자격이 의문시된다”며 황씨에 대한 탄핵을 발의했다.

29세의 종교학과 재학생인 황씨는 불과 지난 달에 서울대 총학생회장에 선출되어 채소장사, 언더그라운드 가수, 무에타이 프로선수 등 너무나 많은 특이한 경력으로 언론의 관심을 끌었다.

하지만 고려대 의대 입학이나 유명 월간지의 견습기자 등과 같은 특이한 경력에 대해 의문이 제기됐다.

의문이 커지자 학생회와 교내 언론은 이를 규명하기 위해 그에 대한 청문회를 열었고 그는 해명을 하지 못 했다고 학생회는 탄핵 발의안에서 말했다.
