From news reports Korea`s players are staying focused on Tuesday`s World Cup match against Togo.

News that Togo coach Otto Pfister quit his job because of a pay dispute between the players and the national federation has not distracted the Koreans.

Kodjovi Mawuena, who coached the team at the African Nations Cup in 2000, was selected to lead the Togolese national team after Pfister walked out overnight.

"I don`t think his resignation would do any good to our team," Korea`s Dutch coach, Dick Advocaat, said through his team spokesman, Lee Won-jae. "The resignation may rather help them strengthen their team unity." Korea striker Lee Chun-soo also does not think the turmoil in the Togo camp will be distracting.

"It doesn`t have a big influence on the team. We`re just going to focus on our training and do our best against Togo," Lee said.

But midfielder Baek Ji-hoon added that the problems for Togo could help Korea.

"The organization of Togo may be a little bit scattered. It will be a benefit for us," Baek said. "If we are mentally ready, it doesn`t matter what team we play. The important thing is that we are ready." Togo`s new coach Mawuena said on Saturday he hoped his predecessor and father figure Pfister would return to the team but said he was also well placed to lead them through their first World Cup.

"Otto Pfister was like a father to us," Mawuena said in a news conference. "His departure has really affected us, but we will continue to follow his tactics and we hope he will return soon." Pfister has signaled he would not return to the negotiating table, saying that the dream of his life had been destroyed, but Togolese officials said they would have him back if he wanted to return.

SBS-TV, one of Korea`s major broadcasting networks, reported Saturday that Togo`s star player Emmanuel Adebayor said in a radio interview that he would follow suit if the coaching staff leave.

New coach Mawuena said he could live up to the job. "I have played for the national side, captained it and I have coached the team on several occasions either as assistant or as head coach," he said.

Mawuena, who already conducted his first training session on Saturday, now has three days before World Cup debutants Togo open their Group G campaign against Korea in Frankfurt. Togo`s other group opponents are Switzerland and France.

Togo`s players have demanded 155,000 euros ($196,200) each to play in the World Cup plus 30,000 each per win and half that per draw. Officials have said that was too much.

But the players` demands for money, which forced Pfister to resign, angered fans in Togo.

Commentators accused the World Cup squad of greed and a lack of patriotism ahead of their debut in football`s premier tournament.

"Our players don`t appear interested in using the opportunity presented to them by being in the World Cup," according to a comment published on the government website.

"Are they players or bankers," said the commentator, who accused the national team of making excessive financial demands.

"Togo is not Brazil or Italy or France. We have only limited financial resources," said the website text.

Togo`s Prime Minister Edem Kodjo and Sports Minister Ayouta Ouyenga flew to Germany but tried in vain to resolve a pay dispute.

Ahead of Korea`s first match with Togo, coach Advocaat said the national soccer team has almost completed physical fitness training but still needs to be sharper.

"The test result was more than excellent compared with February, and some players from 2002 are even better than four years ago," Advocaat told reporters.

"There`s no need to train any more for physical fitness, because we are well enough," he added. "Now, we need to just get fresh and a little bit sharper still, the shorter work." In the 2002 World Cup co-hosted by Korea and Japan, Korea`s players surprised the world with their superb plays and tireless stamina to advance to the semifinals of the prestigious tournament.

Responding to a question about the warm weather, Advocaat said, "We are used to playing in the summer with very hot weather. With the tests being done, we have no problems physical wise." After a French reporter asked about the team`s morale after losing to Ghana, Advocaat retorted that France`s fighting spirit must be lower than Korea`s.
