상대방의 의견에 반대할 때에는 off base(사실과 동떨어진), not true(사실이 아닌), unfounded/ groundless(근거 없는), unproven(입증되지 않은), problematic(문제가 많은), unsubstantiated(확증 없는), questionable(문제시되는), doubtful(의심스러운), dubious(애매한), ambiguous(애매모호한), improbable/ unlikely(일어날 것 같지 않은)등과 같은 표현을 쓸 수 있습니다. 반면, 상대방의 의견에 동의할 때는 convincing(설득력이 있는), well-supported(근거가 분명한), very likely(그럴듯한), probably(아마도), well reasoned(이치에 맞는)와 같은 표현들이 자주 등장합니다.
어떤 문제를 논의하거나(address the issue), 해결책을 찾아내고(work out the solution), 이론을 지지하기(support a thesis) 위한 글에도 논쟁이 많이 등장합니다. 이런 글에서는 적절한(appropriate) 세부내용(details)을 밝힌 후 자신의 주장을 펴나가게(express the opinion) 되죠. 어떤 하나의 결론을 내리기(draw a conclusion, reach a conclusion) 전에 독자에게 미리 다른 결과를 따져볼 수 있도록(weigh the consequences) 분명히 밝혀주는 글이 좋은 글이겠죠.
상대의 의견에 문제가 많다고 생각이 들 때는 outweigh(능가하다), undermine(약화시키다), defeat(패배시키다), fail to promote(조장하지 못하다), thwart/ impede/ hinder/ hamper(방해하다) 등을 사용해 논박할 수 있습니다.
논쟁을 펼쳐가는 방법 중에는 일반적인 사람들이 믿고 있는 신념 즉, popular belief, conventional wisdom이나 오해하고 있는 사실인 myth를 먼저 밝힌 후 but, however, nevertheless, yet, still, though, despite the fact that, in spite of the fact that을 사용해 자신의 의견을 밝히는 경우가 많습니다.
반면, 자신의 주장을 확실히 밝히고자 할 때는 clearly(분명히), emphatically(강조적으로), absolutely(절대적으로), without a doubt(의심할 여지 없이), without reservation(주저 없이) 등과 같은 부사(구)를 쓴 후 자신의 의견을 강하게 제시할 수 있죠.
