Directions:
In this part, you will be asked to propose a solution to the problem you hear about. You will have 45 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.
In your response, make sure to
• show that you understand the problem and
• propose how to deal with the problem.
[Question]W: Before I end this meeting, I'd like to bring up a problem we've been having with our staff. Some of the department heads have noticed that the employees have been spending more time on breaks and less time doing work. It has affected the productivity of the office and it's discouraging to those who keep strict time at work. M: Yes, I've seen some of the staff linger in the break room or talk on their mobile phones in the hallways. One of them even slipped out of the building and took 15 minutes to return. W: That is unacceptable. Before this problem gets really serious, I think we need to deal with it. We don't have time to discuss it now, so may I ask all of you to give me suggestions before the end of the day? |
Good afternoon, Ms. Williams. This is Harry. You mentioned at the meeting today that some of the staff have been violating the rules on taking breaks. You asked us to find a way to solve the problem. I would like to suggest using an electronic recording system. Workers must use their security card to leave and enter the office when they take a break. The electronic system will record how much time they spend on breaks. We can institute disciplinary measures for those who break this rule more than once. I’m now thinking about what sort of penalties can be applied. Anyhow, when this is sorted out, administration can send a memo to the staff regarding the rules on taking breaks. If you think my proposal might be useful, I am more than willing to drop by your office to discuss it in more detail.
