I'm not really sure how it goes.

When I wore a younger man's clothes.

Well we're all in the mood for a melody.

And you've got us feeling alright

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine. He gets me my drinks for free.

And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke.

But there's some place that he'd rather be

He says, “Bill, I believe that is killing me”

As a smile ran away from his face.

“Well, I'm sure that I could be a movie star if I could get out of this place”

oh, la la la la ..... la la la....

Now Paul is a real estate novelist.

Who never had time for a wife.

And he's talking with Davy who's still in the navy.

And probably will be for life

And the waitress is practicing politics

As the businessmen slowly get stoned

Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness.

But, it's better than drinking along.

It's pretty good crowd for a Saturday.

And the manager gives me a smile

'Cause he knows that it's me they've been coming to see.

To forget about life for a while.

And the piano sounds like a carnival

And the microphone smells like a beer

And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar

And say man, “Man, what are you doing here?”

해설

피아노를 치며 노래를 부르는 한 남자의 눈을 통해 매우 소박하고 친근한 냄새를 풍기는 술집을

묘사한 노래이다. 이 술집에 찾아오는 사람들은 모두 꿈을 갖고 있지만 그것을 실현하기에는

너무 힘들어 친구와 술과 노래를 통해서 잠시라도 고된 세상을 잊으려고 한다.

The regular crowd shuffles in. 단골손님들은 서서히 들어오고

☞regular crowd : 단골손님들 “regulars”라고 표현하는 경우가 더 흔하다. 한 사람일 경우

그냥 “regular”라고 표현한다.

There's an old man sitting next to me. 내 옆에는 한 노인이 앉아.

Making love to his tonic and gin. 토닉과 진을 즐기면서

☞making love : 사랑을 나누다.(보통 육체적인 사랑을 말한다) 이곡에서는 “술에 취한다.”는

                         뜻으로 사용됐다.

He says, “Son, can you play me a memory”

그는 말한다. “젊은이, 나를 위해 추억의 노래하나 연주해 주겠나?”

I'm not really sure how it goes. 나는 확실히 어떻게 연주해야 되는지는 모르지만

But it's sad and it's sweet. 그것은 슬프면서도 달콤하지.

And I knew complete. 나는 완벽하게 알았었는데

When I wore a younger man's clothes. 내가 더 젊었을 때는

Sing us a song, you're the piano man. 우리에게 노래를 해줘, 너는 피아노맨 이잖아

Well we're all in the mood for a melody. 우리 모두는 멜로디 하나를 듣고 싶어 하는 분위기라네

사업가들이 서서히 취해가면서

☞stoned : 술에 만취된, 이외에도 잘 쓰이는 표현으로는 “drunk” “buzzed” “tanked” “ warped”

등이 있다. “stoned”는 술보다는 마약에 더 많이 쓰인다.

Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness.

그래 그들은 외로움이라는 술을 함께 나누고 있지.

But, it's better than drinking along.

하지만 혼자 마시는 것보다 좋았지.

토요일 치고는 많은 손님이 왔다.

☞pretty good crowd : 이 노래에서는 관중이 매우 좋다는 뜻보다는 “손님이 아주 많다”고

   보는 것이 옳다.

And the manager gives me a smile

그리고 지배인은 나에게 미소를 짓지

'Cause he knows that it's me they've been coming to see.

왜냐하면 그들이 나를 보러온 것임을 알기 때문이야.

To forget about life for a while.

그들은 잠시라도 인생을 잊고 싶어서 온다.
