Police yesterday detained 115 people involved in what authorities deemed illegal strikes at POSCO`s head office in the southeastern city of Pohang.

Local police are seeking arrest warrants for 17 union leaders for disrupting POSCO`s operations and committing violence. They have also instituted a criminal search for some leaders who escaped the scene right after the unions ended their occupation of the 12-story building.

The eight-day sit-in ended early Friday morning as striking workers withdrew voluntarily, only a few hours after the presidential office issued a stern warning.

The rally involved some 2,500 workers from POSCO`s subcontracting companies protesting the steelmaker`s interference in wage disputes between the unions and their companies.

POSCO is the nation`s largest steelmaker and the world`s fourth largest.

The police yesterday released around 1,500 workers after conducting identification procedures. The law enforcement agency said a total of 2,437 workers participated in the protest.

POSCO is seeking civil and criminal charges against strikers who instigated the illegal occupation of its headquarters and damaged the company`s property, said Lee Ku-taek, the steelmaker`s CEO, after the rally ended.

"We will also work to normalize operations by recovering damaged company property," Lee said, adding that the strike showed that illegal activities could "not be justified under any circumstances." The company said the strike cost over 200 billion won ($209.6 million) as it had paralyzed operations. It also substantially impacted shares, which have fallen by around 5 percent since the strike began.

The nation`s two major labor umbrella groups yesterday issued a statement claiming that another strike could hit POSCO unless underlying problems related to subcontractors are resolved.

Tension between strikers and the police were severe as police officers blocked food deliveries and cut off electricity and water supplies to the building. Some hundreds of strikers left the building, complaining of hunger and exhaustion, but the remaining protesters confronted riot police by spraying them with boiling water and erecting barricades, blocking stairways to the upper floors.

Strikers constantly clashed with riot police, leaving at least 20 workers and 10 police officers injured. One worker is reported to be in a coma with head injuries.

경찰은 어제 당국이 불법 파업으로 간주한 포항 포스코 본사 사옥 점거 농성과 관련된 115명의 시위대를 체포했다.

현지 경찰은 포스코의 업무 방해와 폭력 행위 혐의로 17명의 노조 지도자들에 대한 체포영장을 신청했다. 경찰은 또 시위대가 포스코 본사 사옥에 대한 불법 점거를 마치고 해산한 뒤 현장을 빠져나간 일부 지도자들에 대한 범인 검색에 나섰다.

청와대가 엄중 경고를 내린지 불과 몇시간 후 시위대들이 자신 해산하면서 8일간의 점거 농성은 금요일 오전 종료되었다.

노조와 하청업체간 임금 협상에 포스코가 개입한 데 항의하며 포스코 하청업체 근로자 2천5백여명이 이번 점거 농성에 참여했다.

포스코는 국내 최대 철강업체이자 세계 4위의 철강업체이다.

경찰은 어제 신분 확인 절차를 마친 뒤 1천5백여명의 시위 참가자들을 석방했다. 경찰은 총 2천437명의 노동자들이 시위에 참가했다고 말했다.

포스코는 본사 사옥을 불법 점거하고 회사 재산을 파괴한 시위대를 상대로 민-형사상 고소를 제기할 방침이라고 이구택 포스코 회장은 시위가 끝난 뒤 말했다.

“우리는 또 파손된 회사 재산을 원상복구해 업무를 정상화할 계획”이라고 이 회장은 말했다. 그는 불법 파업은 어떤 경우에도 정당화될 수 없다고 덧붙였다.

포스코는 이번 점거 농성으로 회사 업무가 마비되는 바람에 2천억원의 손실을 입었다고 말했다. 파업이 시작된 이래로 포스코의 주가는 5%나 하락했다.

국내 양대 노동단체들은 어제 성명을 통해서 하청업체와 관련된 근본적인 문제가 해결되지 않을 경우 추가 파업을 벌일 거라고 말했다.

경찰이 음식 배달을 차단하고 사옥에 대해 단전-단수 조치를 내리면서 시위대와 경찰간 긴장이 극도로 고조되었다. 배고픔과 피곤에 지친 수백명의 시위대가 건물을 이탈했지만 남은 시위대들은 경찰에 뜨거운 물을 쏟아붓고 바리케이드를 설치하고 위층으로 연결되는 계단을 봉쇄하면서 전경들과 맞섰다.

시위대가 전경과 지속적으로 충돌하면서 적어도 20명의 노동자와 10명의 전경이 부상을 입었다. 보도에 따르면 노동자 중 한명은 머리 부상으로 혼수상태에 빠졌다고 한다.
