The government is to hold a meeting with the ruling Uri Party today to discuss improving the management of school meals in the wake of a mass food poisoning incident last week.

The government also starts today its inspection of meal services at more than 10,000 schools nationwide.

The government said it will focus on sanitary conditions of school cafeterias and see how delivered ingredients are being checked by nutritionists at schools.

On Friday, education authorities confirmed that nearly 1,700 students in 25 schools in Seoul and nearby cities since June 16 had food poisoning from contaminated school meals.

The inspections are expected to take at least three to four weeks and are likely to cause inconvenience to students, many of whom are taking final examinations beginning this week. Some schools are considering bringing forward the summer vacation or rescheduling examinations.

The latest food scandal dealt a severe blow to CJ Food System, which supplied food to the schools involved. The company halted operation of all of its cafeterias at 89 schools, which affected some 80,000 students.

At the meeting, the Education Ministry and the Uri Party are likely to talk about encouraging schools to directly operate school cafeterias and recommend them to use homegrown products for preparing meals.

The government is considering providing subsidies to schools that decide to run school cafeterias themselves.

Lawmakers are also to point out loopholes in the government`s alert system.

The government is conducting a separate investigation to clarify allegations that CJ Food System is responsible for the food poisoning.

"If anything happens to school meals, (school authorities) are asked to make the first report to public health centers, not directly to the Korea Food and Drug Agency. This shows how poor the government`s alert system is," said Rep. Lee Eun-young who is also a member of an inspection team at the National Assembly.

The government is conducting a separate investigation to clarify allegations that CJ Food System is responsible for the food poisoning.

Contracts between schools and CJ Food System automatically will be canceled if the government finds the company responsible for the incident, according to education and health authorities.

정부와 열린우리당은 지난주 발생한 대규모 식중독 사고의 여파에 따라 오늘 당정협의회를 열어 학교 급식 체계를 개선하기 위한 방안을 논의한다.

정부는 또 오늘부터 전국 1만여 개 학교를 대상으로 급식실태 조사에 들어간다.

정부는 이번 조사에서 학교 급식소의 위생 실태와 식재료 검수과정 등을 중점적으로 점검할 계획이라고 말했다.

금요일 교육당국은 6월 16일 이후 서울과 주변 도시의 25개 학교 1,700여명의 학생들이 학교급식을 먹고 식중독에 걸린 사실을 확인했다.

이번 정부의 급식실태 조사는 최소한 3-4주 걸릴 전망이어서 이번주부터 학기말 고사를 치르는 많은 학생들이 불편을 겪을 것으로 보인다. 일부 학교는 여름 방학을 앞당기거나 시험 일정을 조정하는 방안을 검토하고 있다.

이번 급식사고는 식중독이 발생한 학교에 급식을 해오던 CJ푸드시스템에 큰 타격을 입혔다. 이 회사는 89개 학교에 대한 급식을 전면 중단했다. 이로 인해 8만여명의 학생들이 급식을 받지 못하고 있다.

오늘 당정협의회에서 교육부와 열린우리당은 학교 직영 급식제를 확대하고 집에서 생산한 식재료를 급식 재료로 사용하는 것을 권장하는 방안을 논의할 가능성이 높다.

정부는 학교 직영 급식으로 전환하기로 결정한 학교에 대해 보조금을 지급하는 방안을 검토 중이다.

국회의원들은 또 정부 비상 대책의 허점을 지적했다.

정부는 CJ푸드시스템이 이번 식중독 급식사고에 책임이 있는지 밝히기 위한 별도 조사를 벌이고 있다.

“최초 급식사고 발생시 보건소에만 보고되고 식품의약품안전청에 보고되지 않은 것은 식품안전경보시스템 제도에 큰 허점이 있다는 증거”라고 진상조사위원인 이은영 의원은 말했다.

정부는 CJ푸드시스템이 이번 식중독 급식사고에 책임이 있는지 밝히기 위한 별도 조사를 벌이고 있다.

교육 및 보건 당국에 따르면 CJ푸드시스템이 이번 급식사고에 책임이 있는 것으로 밝혀질 경우 이 회사와 학교 사이의 계약은 자동으로 취소된다.
