오늘 다룰 표현은 ‘whole’과 ‘all’이 되겠습니다. 두 단어는 비슷한 의미로 받아들여지기 쉽기 때문에 회화에서도 구분 없이 사용하는 경우가 많습니다. 하지만 두 단어의 쓰임은 두드러지게 다르다는 사실입니다.

The professor invited our whole class to his house.

The professor invited all of the students in our class to his house.

The whole committee agrees to the proposal.

All the members of the committee agree to the proposal.

위의 예문을 보시면 ‘whole’과 ‘all’이 각각 단수 명사, 복수명사와 함께 사용된 것을 알 수가 있습니다. 

자, 이 포인트를 적용시켜서 Problem sentences를 수정해보겠습니다.

Problem sentence C는 두 가지로 표현이 가능합니다.

He drank the whole bottle of Soju. [‘bottle’ is a singular and countable noun]

He drank all of the Soju in the bottle. [‘Soju’ is uncountable noun]

마지막 문장은 ‘whole’을 사용해서 표현이 가능합니다. 자, 이번 달에 번 돈 모두를 와이프가 가로채 갔습니다.^^;; 한 달에 벌어 들이는 돈을 우리는 ‘봉급/salary’라고 하죠. 여기서 ‘salary’는 가산명사이므로 다음과 같은 문장을 만들 수 있습니다.

★NOTE★

‘~my whole salary this month’에서는 ‘I’ve earned’를 사용하지 않은 이유는 ‘salary’앞에 ‘my’가 있기 때문이다. 즉, ‘내가 번 봉급’ 이라는 사실을 청자는 미리 눈치챌 수 있기 때문에 사용하지 않은 것이다.

‘all (of) Noun’ 에서 ‘of’의 사용은 optional하다는 것은 너무나도 잘 알고 있는 포인트 입니다. 하지만 한 가지 중요한 사실을 간과하시는 분들이 간혹 있습니다.

Ex) I ate a variety of Chinese food in the restaurant and I enjoyed all of them.

[‘~~~all them’으로 표현하면 틀린 문장이 됩니다.]

Ex) I ate a variety of Chinese food in the restaurant and I enjoyed them all. 

Ex) I like Wondergirls and Rain and their all music. (X)

    I like Wondergirls and Rain and all of their music. (O)

제가 개인적으로 굉장히 싫어하는 속담입니다. 사람의 능력은 자신이 노력여하에 따라서 얼마든지 발전될 수 있는 잠재력을 가진 보물과도 같은 것이라는 것을 저는 확신합니다. 주위에도 자신의 한계를 극복하고 이겨내서 자신이 원하는 삶, 다시 말해서 살고 싶은 대로 사는 사람들 많이 있습니다. 물론 그것은 전적으로 스스로의 노력에 달려있겠죠..^^
