유형1. Main Purpose/Topic 문제 접근법
1) 유형 소개
Main Purpose/Topic은 대화나 강의의 중심 내용을 찾는 문제 유형이다.
이때 대화는 대화의 목적, 강의는 강의의 주제를 주로 묻는다.
2) 질문 형태
Main Purpose
Why does the student go to see his/her professor?
Why does the student talk to the university employee?
Why does the professor ask to see the student?
Main Topic
What are the speakers mainly discussing?
What is the conversation/lecture mainly about?
What is the main topic of the conversation/lecture?
3) 핵심 전략
지문의 도입부를 집중하여 듣는다.
대화나 강의의 중심 내용은 주로 도입부에서 언급되므로 이를 놓치지 않고 들어야 한다.
* 대화: 주로 화자들이 인사를 나눈 다음에 대화의 중심 내용이 언급됨
* 강의: 인사나 지난 수업에서 다루었던 내용을 언급한 다음에 주로 강의의 중심 내용이 언급됨
중심 내용을 언급하는 표시어에 집중하며 듣는다.
지문에서 중심 내용을 언급할 때 자주 쓰이는 표현이 있다. 이를 표시어라고 하는데, 이 표시어 앞뒤로 중심 내용이
등장하는 경우가 많으므로 집중해서 듣는다. 듣기 지문에서 주로 나오는 표시어는 다음과 같다.
* 대화: I wanted to talk to you about~, I'm wondering~
* 강의: Today, we will be discussing~, Today, we're going to look at~
Tip 지문의 도입부에서 주제가 확실히 언급되지 않은 경우가 간혹 있다.
이때는 지문 전체를 듣고 전반적인 내용을 파악한 후 알맞은 답을 찾아야 한다.
4) 전략 적용
Listen to part of a talk in an astronomy class. ― 강의의 Directions를 주의해서 듣는다.
OK, we've been, uh, talking a lot about the more theoretical aspects of astronomy, especially the methods used by astronomers to, uh, chart the movements of celestial bodies. … (중략) … Astronomers have recently applied their knowledge to the study of art. I know... It sounds pretty strange. Everybody's heard of Van Gogh, right? Well, the fact that most of his works were done in the impressionist style―you konw, more concerned with capturing mood than with accurately portraying the subject―um, led many people to think that he was not concerned so much about detail. However, this stereotype has been shattered with recent revelations about several of Van Gogh's pieces. In particular, the ones that contain, uh, celestial phenomena-stars ans such. A group of astronovers from a university in Texas used their knowledge of the movement of stars to show that Van Gogh's portrayal of the night skies was so accurate that it is possible to determine the, um, exact date and time that individual works were painted. Today we're going to look at how this was done. ― 표시어 주위를 집중해서 듣는다.

도입부에서 교수는 어떻게 천문학자들이 Van Gogh의 그림 속 별들의 움직임을 통해 당시의 정확한 날짜와 시간으르 계산했는지 살펴보겠다(A group of astronovers from a university in Texas used their knowledge of the movement of stars to show that Van Gogh's portrayal of the night skies was so accurate that it is possible to determine the, um, exact date and time that individual works were painted. Today we're going to look at how this was done.)고 말한다.

유형2. Detail 문제 접근법
1) 유형 소개
Detail은 대화나 강의를 통해 알 수 있는 세부 사항을 파악하는 문제 유형이다. 주로 화자가 언급한 내용 중 중심 내용과 관련된 중요 세부 사항을 묻는다.
2) 질문 형태
What does the man/professor say about?
According to the conversation/professor, how does~?
What are some reasons that~?
정답이 2개 이상인 형태
What are two features of~? Choose 2 answers.
What are the two examples the man gives of~? Choose 2 answers.
According to the conversation/professor, what are some reasons for~? Choose 3 answers.
3) 핵심 전략
중요 세부 사항을 주의하여 듣는다.
화자는 지문의 중심 내용과 밀접하게 관련된 세부 사항을 언급하므로 이를 주의하여 듣는다.
듣기 지문에서 화자가 언급하는 중요 새부사항은 다음과 같다.
* 대화: 제안, 충고, 이유, 결과, 예시, 부연 설명 등
* 강의: 이유, 방법, 결과, 특징, 부연 설명, 질문이나 질문에 대답하는 내용, 강조하고자 하는 내용 등
세부 사항을 언급하는 표시어에 집중하여 듣는다.
세부 사항을 언급할 때 자주 쓰이는 표시어를 집중해서 듣는다. 듣기 지문에서 세부 사항을 알려주는 표시어는 다음과 같다.
* 강조하는 내용: It's important~, I'd like to point out~
* 질문을 하거나 질문에 답하는 내용: Does anybody have any ideas?, What else?, That's because~
4) 전략 적용
Listen to part of a talk in an astronomy class.
After a lot of hard work the astronomers determined that it was, uh, Venus ... Well, initially they worked on the assumption that it was Venus, but they were eventually proved to be correct.
So, by looking at old almanacs-uh, these are compendiums of knowledge about specific regions that are usually published annually-the astronomers were able to figure out that Venus was particularly bright in the evening sky in June of 1890. It was already known that the work was painted during this month because of a letter written by Van Gogh to his brother. ― 강의에서 금성을 확인하게 된 방법을 설명하는 내용을 주의하여 듣는다.
Anyway, the researchers traveled to the French town to locate the house in the painting. Fortunately, it was still standing. After making a series of careful comparisons between, um, photographs of the house at different times in the evening and the actual painting, it was discovered that the shadows matched most closely at about 7:00 p.m. Remember ... this was just an estimate. However, using a computer program that calculates the past and future position of the stars and planets, they were able to pinpoint the exact time and date of the scene in the painting-7:00 p.m. on June 16, 1890. Pretty amazing! |
