Eyesight deterioration is common in elderly people, but a study shows that diet may be a factor in the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of vision loss in the US. Researchers in Boston determined this when they conducted a study on over 4,100 people aged fifty-five to eighty. The subjects were asked to answer dietary surveys and were checked for AMD. Many of those who indicated that they often consume excessive amounts of starch and sugar suffered from advanced AMD. Based on this discovery, the researchers think that __________________________.
(a) consumption of sweets results in different vision problems
(b) people should incorporate sugar and starch into their regular diet
(c) proper food intake may help maintain good vision until old age
(d) AMD only targets old Americans who subsist on sugar and starch
