Several adaptations have been made of French writer Gaston Leroux’s book ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, but Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical has been the most commercially successful. It was first staged at Her Majesty’s Theater in London in October of 1986 and made its debut on Broadway on January 26, 1988. It is the longest-running show on Broadway and has reportedly earned over $3.2 billion. Though Webber’s version has become very popular, the original failed to elicit a positive response from the public when it was published in 1910.
