Hela: The Villain Who is Hated and Loved
Cate Blanchett is an award-winning Australian actress who is well respected worldwide. She is the only Australian actress to win two Academy Awards. She is famous for her roles as Queen Elizabeth in “Elizabeth” and “Elizabeth: The Golden Age,” and Galadriel in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and the “Hobbit” trilogy.
Cate Blanchett’s most recent role, Hela, is another addition to her well-portrayed roles. Hela is the villain of the 17th film of Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Thor: Ragnarok.”
The events of the movie are set after the events of “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and four years after the events of “Thor: The Dark World.” In the new Thor movie, Thor is imprisoned without his hammer in the planet Sakaar where he stands against the Hulk, his former fellow Avenger, as his opponent. He needs to defeat Hulk in a gladiatorial battle to be freed from captivity and to save the Asgardian civilization from the hands of Hela and from Ragnarok, the end of the Asgardian civilization.
Hela is the Goddess of Death. She is the first female villain of Marvel Cinematic Universe.Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of Hela has gained her even more admiration from Thor fans and movie critics around the world. Many consider this a milestone in Hollywood because male actors are usually the ones who are cast to play the best supervillain roles. Although many diverse protagonist roles are given to women, only a few antagonist roles are given to them.
Although Hela is a supervillain meant to be hated for wanting to bring destruction to Asgard, Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of Hela is loved by many. According to many moviegoers, an effective villain is someone who succeeds in being loved and being hated by audiences at the same time. Cate Blanchett did exactly that. Furthermore, according to Taika Waititi, the director of the recent Thor installation, “Cate destroyed the idea of the typical villain.” Other movie critics agree that Cate has impressively portrayed an uncharacteristic female villain that is a breath of fresh air from the stereotypical female villains in many movies today.
“Thor: Ragnarok” did well in the box office, and its makers have Cate Blanchett, among other actors, to thank for it.
