Music of the Millennials
Electro Dance Music, more popularly known as EDM, is a percussive electronic music genre that became popular because of club culture. It includes DJ-centered music where the DJs are the ones who create EDM song lineups or mixes that are played in festivals and rave parties.
Among the EDM songs that topped the charts in 2016 are “Closer” by the Chainsmokers, “Cold Water” by Major Lazer featuring Justin Bieber, and “This is what I came for” by Calvin Harris and Rihanna. EDM is considered by many as the “music of the millennials” because of the great impact that the music genre has on the said generation.
EDM started around the late 80s and early 90s when club culture emerged in Europe. In the U.S., it was initially associated with drug use and wild partying, so it was not widely accepted by the public. However, in the early 2000s, the American music industry made efforts to change the public’s negative notions about EDM. Since then, EDM became known as an umbrella of music genres that include disco, house, techno, dubstep, and trance.
The annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival held in California, USA is believed to be the international music event that brought about the EDM hype. This music festival features different music genres. It was also where the present generation learned to love EDM songs. The popularity of the music genre was also influenced by the increased use of the Internet as there is a lot of music or video streaming websites like YouTube, Spinnr, and Soundcloud that people can readily access.
The American music industry now considers EDM as one of its cash cows because of how easily it is able to attract paying customers to attend gigs and concerts. Promoting events that feature EDM has been observed to be easier than promoting concerts of solo artists or groups because EDM fans use social media to discover and share EDM parties and gigs. EDM also earns a lot through digital music downloads, online streaming, and club plays.
The EDM industry currently has an estimated value of almost 7 billion US dollars. This music genre’s popularity is also becoming more established outside the Western world because people from Asia and South Africa are showing deeper interest in the music genre. EDM is expected by many to continue dominating the music industry in years to come.
